We are one episode in to Paradise on Disney+ and really impressed with it so far. We'd started the 2nd series of Night Watch, as we really loved the first, but actually a few episodes in, it wasn't holding my husband's attention. I could happily watch it cos I can pretty much watch anything, but it wasn't super riveting, so I suggested we try Paradise as I'd heard good things about it, I just couldn't necessarily remember what they were, and Disney+ have got this new thing on their home screen where they're trying to be Netflix and show you what's the most popular thing showing on their platform at the moment and Paradise is quite high up, along with 1000 Blows.
So we watched the first episode - and at first it's kind of your typical president gets shot, FBI guy is his friend, has to investigate kind of thing. But very well done. The characters are dry, one of them, the main guy especially, but you know there's more under the surface and you're just waiting to get to it, so he's very intriguing and likable despite being quite dry. And you're enthralled by the mystery.
They've planted a lot of little seeds as to how he is going to unravel this mystery of the president's death. Spoiler alert, the president gets shot, but it it's pretty early on you discover that, and if you've seen any of the trailers, you kind of know that's what's gonna happen. So yeah, it seems like a good example of your typical FBI Secret Service American White House kind of drama.
BUT THEN... right at the end of the first episode there is a massive plot twist. Possibly one of the biggest plot twists I can remember in any program ever. I mean things like Manifest, they're pretty far out there, but you kind of know from the offset there's gonna be something crazy there. Whereas this twist comes after you already think you know what you're watching.
They haven't skimped on the FBI kind of typical police drama thing, it's not like they've done that lightly because that's not really what the programme's about. They've done it really well, they've done it as well as White House Down for example - it's got that vibe and it's just as good - yet it's also got this massive other thing going on that you find out at the end of the first episode.
There are hints to something early on, but not enough to really make you think what's coming up. If you can possibly bury your head in the sand, hide under a rock, and not hear about the twist, then do it because it's just really good when it comes, and I hope I haven't spoiled it by telling you that there is a massive twist! So I'm really looking forward to watching the 2nd episode later and finding out more about it and seeing how it all unravels.
