Mastercarver Chris Pye has been sharing video tutorials of how to carve wood online since 2011 - that's a very long time ago in Internet terms! He's been carving since 1975, and is a member of The Master Carvers Association, the oldest association of wood and stone carvers in the UK.
Chris, trained by Mastercarver Gino Masero (1915 - 1995), is a very highly regarded teacher and author, having published lots of books, some of which have been translated for overseas audiences. Now, after nearly 14 years of running WoodCarvingWorkshops.tv, he's making his videos available for free online from his YouTube channel.
Filmed and put together by Carrie Camaan, the videos let you see the techniques Chris teaches up close whilst being expertly guided by Chris himself. Carrie, as an amateur woodcarver, knows what students want to see and so is always sure to capture the best angles and shots to help you get the results you want.
WoodcarvingWorkshops.tv had hundreds of videos available to paying members and these will gradually become available to Chris' subscribers on YouYube.
The obvious place for you to start a new 2025 hobby is with Chris' "A Beginners Woodcarving Course" - a series of 34 videos which includes the tools you need, the basic techniques for carving, and understanding how to work with different woods. The course will guide you through everything you need to start a new hobby to do from home this year.
Because these are not just videos thrown together for YouTube, they're from a proper subscription based website which was successful for over a decade, they also have very detailed PDF downloads available in the description if you like to have something to refer back to. They're also the full videos - not snippets to entice you to sign up to his main website. Chris has wound down his main Woodcarving Workshops TV site so that he can spend more time with his family and travelling the world, so his YouTube channel is the official place for his video teachings now.
