The National Trust is giving away thousands of family day passes for a free day out at a National Trust property, to be used by Friday the 14th March. A family pass covers 2 adults and 3 kids, or 1 adult and up to 4 kids, but a pass can also be used by 1 couple or 1 individual. A child counts as someone under 17 (but under 5s are free anyway so don't count).
Not all properties are included, so you should check the list of exclusions, but the majority in England, Wales and Northern Ireland are. National Trust Scotland is not included in this offer.
The pass you'll get is entry for the property, which doesn't necessarily include car parking, whereas real National Trust membership will include parking in a National Trust car park. Therefore this pass may still mean you need to pay to park at the car park when you get there.
To get the pass completely for free, all you need to do is fill in a form on one of the following websites (these links take you to the actual form):
If the online passes have all gone - I believe they had about 125,000 to give away at the beginning of this week - then you can still get a printed voucher in a newspaper And I'll put the full list of newspapers printing them below. The online form does ask for your post code, and tries to ask you to opt into lots of mailing lists from the newspapers, so it's possible the paper voucher options lets you give away less information if it's just something you cut out and present on the day.
When you fill in an online form, you'll get an email, so do check your spam in case it's gone to your junk folder, with a barcode in there so that you can take that email to have the barcode scanned when you arrive. I believe the voucher and the paper will probably have a similar barcode.
For some National Trust properties, you do need to book in advance, so do check the National Trust website and see if you need to book before heading off. If you do need to book, select that you're a member and enter the code REACHNT130 when it asks you for your membership number. This will just allow you to book for free before showing your actual barcode when you arrive on the day.
National Trust properties are a great way to have an inspiring day out in nature. And since you can take a picnic, other than a bit of parking, this could be a completely free day out for you and the kids.
