Have you ever had Monster Munch oysters? Well, I did last week at the experimental and playful kitchen counter of Whytes.
Restaurant chef Whyte Rushen is known for bold playful dishes that push the boundaries of flavour. He's now a landmark of Hackney’s dining scene with an electrifying mix of bold, imaginative flavours that challenge the norm.
The November menu lineup saw the return of some of their icons, like the monster munch encrusted oysters and the barbecue honey finger burners. The smash burger honestly left me a bit speechless, up there with one of the best I've ever had. I just don't know how they do it.
Don't sleep on the tomato and plum salad - if punchy vinaigrettes are your thing you're in for a treat. And the barbecue black Cod with marmite and miso beer sauce was just genius. I also really loved the tuna rib tartare with scallop and aged soy.
Don't forget to pair all of this with their new Quincy Jones cocktail; a martini with a very unique twist.
Dessert was more cocktails for us - a classic creamy White Russian.
So if you're after something a little different, this is the place for you.
Rushen made his name with pop-ups and supper clubs across London, as well as some "proper jobs" at Michellin-starred chef Tom Kerridge's 'Kerridge’s Bar and Grill', Michellin-starred Brat and Scully St James. In 2023 he delighted fans with his plans to open a bricks and mortar restaurant of his own and started a crowd funder to raise £20,000 to make the dream a reality. 'Whyte's Restaurant' then opened earlier this year in Hackney, London, just a 4 minute walk from London Fields underground.
It’s an open kitchen so you can watch the chefs from the counter seating. There are also a few tables for larger groups.
The menu changes monthly and they also serve excellent wine. They serve reasonably priced dishes which are perfect for sharing. Our meal cost us around £200 which included a couple of rounds of drinks.
Whyte's has laidback vibes - super casual with no dress code - daring dishes, and hospitality that feels like a warm embrace. They're open Wednesday to Sunday, 5pm - 11pm, and you can book online via their website.
