An absolutely WONDERFUL thing I've done recently was to book onto a Leeds Food Tour. We did it a few weeks ago when despite it having been glorious weather for weeks, the heavens decided to open. It didn't matter though because it was AMAZING!
I can not recommend this tour highly enough. I'll try and tell you about it without giving too much away, but what I will say is that whether you're a tourist or a local, you should book a tour with Ellen. We booked it for a mate's birthday but it'd be good for people on their own, or a big group such as a hen or stag party.
How the Leeds Food Tour Works
Ok so here's what happens... You book in to a tour and you are guided around secret spots in Leeds. I said it was good for locals or tourists and that's really true because out of the 7 places we were taken to, I've only been to one of them before and I've lived in Leeds for 24 years, and I'm quite the Foodie.
At some of the locations you sit around a table, like a traditional restaurant experience, and at other you're on the go. The 7 stops we stopped at were:
- A traditional pub for a fish finger sandwich
- A bakery for blondies and cinnamon buns
- A Chinese restaurant for a pork and egg rice bowl
- An Italian tapas restaurant for the MOST PERFECT arancini ball
- A Chilli shop for a delicious chilli sauce and dip samples (this one was FUN!)
- An Indian restaurant for a FULL Indian banquet!!
- A gelato stand for - you guessed it - gelato.
Leeds Food Tours FAQs
Is the food included in the price of the tour ticket?
Yes all of your food is included. You pay for your drinks, if you want them.
Are the servings a decent size / is there actually very much food?
Yes, there most certainly is a LOT of food. I couldn't eat much of the Indian banquet but we had the option to take it home (I don't know if that's the same for everywhere the tour may take you, but it was on ours).
How long does the Leeds Food Tour last?
It lasts about 3 - 4 hours. So it's a good day out.
How big are the groups on a Leeds Food Tour?
There were 12 in our group. When you book you can book as an individual or as a small group. It'd be great for a hen do or a work team building activity.
Can you do the Leeds Food Tour more than once?
The venues vary so you can totally do it more than once. Perhaps mention at the time of booking that you've done one before and where you went, so they can suggest which day / time might be best for you so that you get to visit different places.
Can you do Food Tours anywhere else?
Yes - Ellen does food tours in Harrogate and York too.
How far in advance do you need to book a Food Tour?
I know they get booked up fast so try to book it a while before you want to go. We booked ours a few months in advance.
Can kids do a Leeds Food Tour?
To be honest, their website mostly talks about adults doing the tours. Although they do offer a Parent and Baby tour so you can chat with other parents, which is a fab way to meet people if you're a new Mum or Dad.
Can they cater for dietary requirements on a Leeds Food Tour?
Yes they can absolutely cater for dietary requirements such as vegetarian, vegan, gluten free and allergies. Just let them know your requirements when you book.
Do you walk a really long way on a Food Tour?!
Don't worry - there's more eating than walking! They estimate the distance is around a mile which over 4 hours doesn't feel far at all.
Is the Leeds Food Tour guided or self-guided?
The one we did was guided, with the fabulous Ellen, but you can do self-guided tours too which are therefore cheaper.
