Yesterday we went to the national history museum in Oxford. It was EPIC!
We parked in Hinksey Park and walked in, which is about a 30 minute walk. Joseph loves the geese in the park. We don't have wild geese like that locally unless we go to WWT Slimbridge. Upon our return, we played on the park to wear Joseph out before the drive home. I don't know how much it cost to park as my husband did it incorrectly on the app and we got a parking ticket!
The park is great though. They have a lake there as well. We knew of it as my husband and I walked around it the last time we stayed in Oxford, on which occasion we were there to see a comedy show at the Old Fire Station. We saw Rhys Nicholson live.
We loved the museum! They have lots of trails, so we chose the Dinosaur Detectives. My dino-obsessed child loved becoming a Dino Detective for the morning! We had to find certain dinosaurs based on clues, and tick them off as we went. There were other trails based on age/interest. Oxford Museum of Natural History has an important past with dinosaurs, as the museum's own Megalosaurus was the first ever dinosaur to be named and described!
There is so much to see and do at the museum (one of many in the local area). Entry was upon donation, so this was such an affordable, educational and fun family day out!
I thought it was amazing that, whilst we obviously couldn't touch everything, there was a lot that we were encouraged to touch. It felt thoroughly interactive!
Joseph's favourite thing was the Nile Crocodile. My husband and I loved the T-Rex skeleton.
There is a restaurant there but we didn't eat there as it was busy, so we got some baguettes nearby.
They are running 'Dino Discoveries' for half term. They also have other hands on activities this weekend where little explorers can touch specimens - see their website for more details. Slightly older kids (8+) can also meet volunteer scientists for more hands on science. The events are all just drop ins, you don't need to book.
