Last week me and my family went to Jurassic Discovery in Seaton. We found a carpark just outside, so we parked there for convenience. However, it wasn't cheap (i think it was around £7 for 3 hours). One thing we did notice though, is that it was MUCH cheaper in the winter, like £2 instead of £7. Therefore, I recommend going in the winter months.
Upon arriving, the receptionist seemed nice and we were allowed to enter the softplay. We had a two hour session and could come and go during that time however we wanted to.
The Softplay at Jurassic Discovery
The soft play was nice, it was quite high and decently big. There was lots of entertaining stuff inside, including, I think, 2 or 3 different slides and a ball pit which my younger brother loved. There was lots of seating for adults, and a cafe/restaurant next to the soft play where you could get drinks, lunch, dinner and snacks. There was also an outdoor section which you could access through the soft play and hang out there, but it wasn't too spacious.
The soft play said it was suitable for ages 2 to 15, but I can't really imagine anyone much over 10 enjoying it that much. Adult tickets were much cheaper than child tickets, since you had to pay for adult tickets in order for your children to go. It was, to be honest, quite good value (or at least not crazy expensive like most things are now). However, if you had, say, a 14 year old with younger siblings, although the 14 year old wouldn't want to go on the softplay, you would still have to pay the extra price of a child’s ticket for them since the soft play is supposedly for ages 2 to 15. That, I think, is a slight con, but there’s not much that you can do about it.
“The Last Day of the Dinosaurs” Exhibit At Jurassic Discovery
Personally, the only part of Jurassic Discovery that I really enjoyed was the Last Day of the Dinosaurs exhibit. It featured amazing, huge animatronics of many different dinosaurs, all moving and roaring. There was lots of information too, as well as a trail to complete with quiz questions about dinosaurs that you could find the answers to throughout the exhibit. There were probably about 6 different animatronic scenes that you could see, with many different dinosaurs in them. It was mainly focused on the cretaceous period, as that was just before the asteroid hit. Near the end we walked through a tunnel with videos of the asteroid hitting earth playing on the walls. Then we emerged into one last, huge room, with multiple dinosaurs, including 2 large T-Rexes. One thing that I thought was really clever though, was how they made it look like there were puddles of water on the floor, even though there weren’t.
I will also mention though, that it was very loud. It was fine for me, I could just block out the noise of many dinosaurs roaring at once from different rooms, but if you are especially really sensitive to that then it is something to consider.
After the indoor dinosaurs, the exhibit continued outside, where we saw a crocodile in a pond (a fake one, obviously) and passed a large, covered picnic area with a velociraptor on the roof. There was a sign saying that you are welcome to eat your own picnics there. We got to see some prehistoric plants that were around at the time of the dinosaurs. Finally, we entered a study where there were lots of dinosaur books and fossils on display, some of which you could pick up and feel. We then went through a door that led us back to reception.
Jurassic Discovery, Seaton FAQ
Is it wheelchair accessible?
Well, apart from the soft play obviously, Jurassic Discovery is mostly wheelchair accessible. You can go through the Last Day of the Dinosaurs exhibit easily.
Is it worth the money?
You'll have to ask my Mum. But I think she'd say yes, as you could spend a few hours there in total, if you had a picnic in the garden.
Can you take your own picnic?
You can't take your own picnic into the softplay, but there is a picnic area for you to eat at in the gardens at the end of the Last Day of the Dinosaurs exhibit. There's also a covered area if it's raining.
Will young children enjoy the Last Day of the Dinosaurs exhibit?
Well, I can't speak for most young children, but from my experience my brother is 3 years old and enjoyed seeing the moving dinosaurs and the softplay.
Is it near the sea?
Jurassic Discovery is a mere 5 minute walk from Seaton beach. (Or probably 10 minutes for my little brother.) Also, if you want, you can purchase your tickets to it along with a tram ride of Seaton.
