I recently visited Webbs at Wychbold with a friend and our young children for a splendid afternoon of strolling, chatting, and picking beautiful dahlias whilst the kids ran up and down rows of flowers in the fresh air.
Flora Fields is the name of Webbs' "pick your own" dahlias field, which opened on the 17th August and will remain open until the first frosts... they hope this will be mid-October. The idea is apparently largely to the work of Louise Webb, along with the rest of the Webbs team, due to her passion for freshly cut flowers, and the field features a whopping 52 varieties of flowers!
There are different ways to pay to enter - if you simply want to go and look around it's £6 for an adult or £3 for a child (babes in arms are free). Or if you want to actually pick some flowers, it's £25 to enter and pick up to 20 stems (which they call The Centrepiece ticket) - which I decided actually was not bad value given how awesome the flowers were. Other options are a Child's Posy which includes entry for a kid (3 - 16) and up to 10 steps, or The Showstopper ticket which is as many flowers as you can fit in a 28cm bucket which they estimate is probably 60 - 80 stems depending on how big the flower is. Once you've bought your ticket, you can wander / pick for 2 hours. If you're picking, they loan you the bucket and snippers, but recommend on their website that you bring a bucket to take them home in if you want to keep them in water.
Parking was easy, and it was possible to navigate the field with a push chair - although it was on grass and so a little bumpy. It was also lovely to prolong our visit by wandering around the free gardens they also have there - which I think were called River Gardens. There was a disabled loo near the dahlias field, but you've also still got all the facility of the main Webbs garden centre too.
Overall, a lovely place for a late summer picnic, or afternoon wander. They're open on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, 10am - 4pm.
