If you're a fan of Steve Smallman's children's book "Poo in the Zoo" then you need to head over the Chester Zoo this February half term and next month. I don't know when it was published but I class it as a modern classic, as we've only had it in our house for a few years and it's one of my favourites - despite not personally usually enjoying stories all about poo! The rhymes are great, the rythm is perfect and the story is quite bizarre! (But in a good way!).
From the 14th February to the 16th March your kids can involved with some "hands on" learning about all sorts of different animal poos - including which ones sparkle! They've also got a poo trail, poo parties and Robbie the Robot sucking up poo as he goes around the zoo. Admission to the event is included with your normal zoo ticket, or with membership.
Wildlife Photographer of the Year Exhibit
Chester Zoo is also the proud host of the latest Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibit, on loan from London's National History Museum. This is the 60th year of the exhibition and, having seen it one year in Bristol, I can confirm it has some pretty special moments from the wild.
Where to see snow leopards in the UK?
As if you needed another reason to visit Chester Zoo over the next few months, they now have some rather special residents - snow leopards. I wrote about where to see snow leopards in the UK a couple of years ago and discovered they were soon to be coming to Chester, and now they're here! (Or have been for a while, really.) My son is obsessed with snow leopards, partly thanks to them being so majestic and beautiful, partly probably due to Lord Asriel in His Dark Materials having one as his daemon, and partly because I think they're quite on-trend with toys and even squishmallows of them being everywhere!
We went to Dudley Zoo a while ago to see them, and they're also in the UK at Paradise Wildlife Park in Hertfordshire and Marwell Zoo in England, the Welsh Mountain Zoo in - yep - Wales, and in Scotland at the Highland Wildlife Park.
