Rochester, a historic city in Kent, south east England, is renowned for its rich heritage and picturesque landscapes along the River Medway. The city is famous for its Norman architecture, particularly the 12th-century Rochester Castle, and the beautiful Rochester Cathedral, the second oldest in the country. Rochester also has strong literary ties with Charles Dickens, as he spent much of his life in the area and set many of his novels there, drawing inspiration from its streets and landmarks. Rochester also however, has a chilling history, with lots of sinister stories and spooky goings on... Are you brave enough to visit these spooky spots in Rochester?!
📍Rochester Castle: Some say Charles Dickens haunts the castle moat, forever searching for his chosen resting place after being buried at Westminster Abbey. Plus, Lady Blanche de Warrene is said to reappear every Good Friday. Her story is tragic — she died when an arrow her fiancé shot glanced off a rebel's armor and struck her right in the heart.
📍Restoration House: A former mansion turned film set, where the ghost of a woman in a long dress roams the halls, and visitors report noises of footsteps and the feeling of being watched.
📍The Six Poor Travellers House: This 16th-century hostel is said to be haunted by the ghost of a man in a top hat, thought to be the original founder.
📍Guildhall Museum: Known for its phantom prisoner in a white dress and the sounds of a jailer's footsteps echoing through its halls — once used as a court and prison.
📍Eastgate House: The Tudor mansion where "The Grey Lady" haunts the upper floors. Built in the 16th century, this house has been home to countless eerie stories.
📍St. Margaret's Street: A monk bricked up alive haunts these walls, emerging each November to roam the street.
📍The Cooper's Arms and Love Lane: The spirit of a Cooper's Arms member condemned by his own order appears annually in the pub. And on Love Lane, a ghostly woman has wandered since WWII, only visible from the waist up.
